This holiday home inspired by cute alpine chalets and located on the peninsula in St Petersburg. Shomali Design Studio tried to modernize the uniform style of these chalets and design a unique holiday home. To have a more attractive harmony with charming surrounding nature, the clients like to have low-level house, panoramic view, terrace and balcony.

Kujdane
Iranian architecture firm Shomali Design Studio has conceptualized a distinctive cabin amidst the verdant forested region of northern Iran. Led by brothers Yaser Rashid Shomali and Yasin Rashid Shomali, the ‘Kujdane’ cabin, which translates to ‘very small’ in English, exhibits an unorthodox interpretation of the traditional A-frame rooftop. The wooden material palette of the structure is complemented with muted-grey interiors and paired with a façade of full-height glazing. Its purpose is to serve as an isolated retreat amidst nature.

Marriage of Old and New
The woods of northern Iran typically house traditional A-frame cabins with sharp-angled corners. We took the conventional A-frame sloping roof and split it in the center with a hollow glass vertical passage offering an element of surprise. In addition, we also replaced the old-fashioned, sharp-angled corners of A-frame dwellings with a curved-line roof to bring in the sense of warmth and tranquility. The interiors are contemporary and stylish, creating an interesting interplay with the A-frame roof.

Unconventional Façade
The sloping A-frame roof and a horizontal concrete slab make the structure look effortlessly suspended above ground. The front façade comprises floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering unobstructed views of the lush green natural surroundings.

Cozy and Modern Interiors
It has a compact, duplex-style, open-layout interior. The upper level houses the bedroom and the study, while the lower level has an open kitchen and living area. The lower floor also extends to a small outdoor deck with a staircase leading to the ground level. The cabin has a standing seam metal roofing system and a wood linear ceiling. The wood and the muted-grey interiors create a warm and cozy, homely ambiance. Additionally, the cabin is well-appointed with modern appliances and comforts.

One with Nature
The reason we designed the ‘Kujdane’ Cabin with a centralised core is so that residents continue to feel one with nature even though they are inside the house. While we were inspired by the traditional triangle roof of every A-frame chalet, we have deconstructed the style and expressed it in our own unique way.
